Success Grows on You
Organisations often acknowledge progress through successful outcomes.
A great variety of metrics are available to quantify, monitor, report and celebrate success, less so to understand its consequences.
However, an organisation’s abilities may be influenced by the conditions developing alongside success and growth.
Success validates continuation, which in turn generates momentum.
Momentum creates opportunities, and in turn the capability for further successful outcomes.
Left unchecked this continuum becomes self-validating.
Each validation appears rational in isolation. However, in pursuit of success, their accumulation and implementation over time may influence the future direction and capability of an organisation.
As the continuum persists, the relationship between effort and outcome begins to change. Opportunities continue to be developed, projects continue evolving, projects progress and outcomes are delivered. However, a threshold exists where further efforts being expended and additional improvement being sought outweighs the value brought. It is at this threshold that diminishing returns become evident.
The self-validating continuum does not recognise this threshold. Success can obscure it through the accumulation of momentum, opportunities and capability whilst continuing to validate the continuum.
In meeting an organisation's objectives successfully, the conditions generated alongside success continue to grow. Left unrecognised, these conditions can begin influencing direction, efficiency and continued effort whilst success itself remains the primary measure of progress.
Success validates more than progress.
